Fallout or Planescape: Torment.

To be honest the graphics weren't that good for ~1997, the cutscenes were, but most of the rest of it was rushed looking 2D garbage.

First RPG's are always remembered better than they were, and FF7 was the first RPG for a lot of kids, that's why people are so fond of it. The game itself had TONS of flaws, FF6 was a MUCH more solid game, yet it wasn't commercial and wasn't marketed like FF7 was, so throngs of children didn't play it as their first.

There are way, WAY better games out there and (gasp) a bunch of them aren't even Final Fantasy games!

ToP or any single game of the Suikoden series crush FF7 hands down as far as Console RPG's go, those are the ones i'd rate best, Chrono Trigger, FF6, Lufia 2 and a few others get honorable mention.

But RPG's can't realy be thought of as a whole, there are subgenres; The best Action RPG is Ocarina of Time, the best tactical / strategy RPG is either Disgaea or Tactics Ogre, the best Puzzle RPG is Lufia 2, the best MMORPG is World of Warcraft, the best P&P RPG is D&D, the best TCG (could be considered an RPG) is MTG

Oo are you serious? FF7's characters are cliche and commercialized, utter crap.. and the story isn't much better. "Omg you weren't actually fighting me, IT WAS CLONES ALL ALONG!". And the scene where Aeris dies was awful, I actually laughed when it happened. And yes I played it through when it was brand new, I still have the original white label discs, and it did seem a lot better of a game then than it is now. All in all, FF7 is good, maybe great depending on how many RPG's you've played (the fewer you've played the better it will seem). But it is certainly not the best ever, there are far more qualified contenders, in each and every aspect of an RPG, except perhaps in terms of cutscene graphics; the game's in-play graphics were kind of crappy, but the cgi cutscenes were beautifully done for that era of gaming, even if some of them were a bit cheesy in content.

If you can get your hands on a copy (they go for about $200 new, though I've heard of a sealed copy fetching $300+), try Suikoden 2 for the PS1. It's amazing, if you don't mind a classic RPG look.

well ive played legend of dragoon wild arms 2 xenosaga ff7~10 etc... ff7 is the best... currently playing crisis core and its gfg too

my top 3 favorite rgs havent even been mentioned yet
