Interesting. From the games that you like, and don't like, it's hard to make a recommendation.
Valkyrie Profile is my favorite RPG of all time, but neither LOD or Grandia really compare in atmosphere. Grandia brings more of a childish perspective to the RPG, but it's done very well. I haven't beaten the whole game, so I can't comment on the entire plot, but that was feel I got from it. LOD is more of a teen vibe, for lack of a better term. LOD is definitely a very enjoyable playthrough, the combat is interesting, the story has a few twists(especially the ending), I'd recommend LOD any day of the week.
I find it interesting you like Valkyrie Profile, but not Vagrant Story though, was it the combat system? I actually thought they gave off very similar vibes(from what I played of Vagrant Story).
The Norse mythology, bright colors, and sprite based drawings caught me from the very opening of Valkyrie Profile. I'm not an enormous fan of the combat in Vagrant Story (although I do think it's innovative) ARPG's rely on graphics far more than turn based (or whatever Valk Profile is). I'm typically not one to harp on the graphics of an rpg, but I think it really hurts Vagrant Story.
Now that being said, I should probably give the game another spin as I never finished it in the first place. Perhaps I was a little over zealous in stating that I didn't like it outright. I probably should have said I'm not interested in any ARPG/dungeon crawlers.
