Conquer!!! (just kidding)
most of the f2p's are pretty playable as a non-spender, just have to look out for the ones like conquer, you can check http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm for a way to check for just how "free" they are, but you're still going to have to check videos and the game's item mall(if it has one) to see if it fits your tastes/criteria since you were a little vague :P

Edit: keep in mind, some games have an item mall, but don't offer anything drastic, just cosmetic or minor "quality of life" improvements (like Path of Exile)

Looks like you need some bonding time with Onii to learn more!

Try Brave Frontier on iOS or Android if you have either. Not an MMO but turn based like Final Fantasy if you like those sorts.

As for actual MMOs there aren't very many interesting ones, specially for casual except maybe Archeage if you're into the whole sandbox thing.

Guild Wars 2 is great for casual gaming. Not much of a gear grind except for Legendaries which is all aesthetics and there is no sub so you can hop on and off whenever without feeling like you are wasting money
