Don't do it man, its a trap. That gem has been turned into dust on private and official.

I agree, for me UO was great back in UO:R but now official shards aren't as fun as before and private shards are just that private shards. Nothing is better than UO:R.
(By private shards, I mean like what do you expect from a shard ran by a fan of the game. Unbalance and favoritism.)

I'm actually getting back into UO and trying to setup a private shard with a friend within a week or two. This game has been definitely a huge part of my life and only time will tell how successful I will be at recreating its best features... We are planning to launch in UO:R and will try to stay as "vanilla" as possible.

Either way, if you got some good private servers in that era in mind, I would try them.

UO:Forever... hit a peak of about 1k players... only been a few months since its released. Lots of pixels (neon hues n shit) I'm not a fan... but people play.

There is a lord british game coming out in a bit called

Shroud of the Avatar, he is trying to remake what he did with UO

UO:Forever is your best bet for now, but the main thing for UO related news is going to be watching for In Por Ylem 3.

It is the last hurrah for probably the best private UO server ever, as well as the population probably peaking around 2500.

They have forums up so you can keep up on the development also!

Yeah,. it's daft they still ask a monthly subscription that's on par with games like WoW and the like.

UO is really the ultimate candidate for going F2P to get a lot of players into it,.. there's no way im paying for this game - but if it were f2p, i'd take a look at the things going on with it.
Still have some millions and rare artifacts on my original characters,.. quite curious to see whether they're worth anything now.

Check out UOGamers, Also there are some really good free shards. Just look around for you like and hop in. Lots of UO:R servers and stuff.
