I've always been interested in this game, but never taken the time to really try it because it seems very complex and I haven't played many other Ultima games. I might check this out later. Is this a private server?

Yes it is a private shard. It is complex only in that there are sooooooooooo many aspects (little things) to the game but they honestly make it that much more interesting!!!!
Renaissance is more like traditional UO people think of. AOS is more like WoW/D2 awesomeness.

Are there mercenary and pets? ( Dragons )
I used to play where you could get those. the dragon started as a baby and grew full eventually.

they are Evo(lution) pets yes! great for PvM! recently nerfed for PvP but normal dragons and nightmares still rape! <--- this is on UO:R

On AoS they have Evo weapons instead!!!
