why is it that when i started at depth 8 gold and heat gain is bad?

what level are your items? ... try doing arena lvl's for heat

its because its the start of a new stratum. Edit: from my experience, usually the first half of the tier doesn't pay out as well as the 2nd half. There are 6 stratum total in each elevator.

D1-3 = 1st Stratum, Tier 1
Clockwork Terminal
D5-7 = 2nd Stratum

Moorcroft Manor - Start of Tier 2
D8-11 = 3rd Stratum
Clockwork Terminal
D13-17 = 4th Stratum

Emberlight - Start of Tier 3
D18 - 21 = 5th Stratum
Clockwork Terminal
D23-28 = 6th Stratum

Usually the even stratums are the pay off points thus many people try to "join parties" in hopes that they skip the first 4 levels and hit the Clockwork Terminals in order to maximize their CE use. Also, don't be shy to wait for the arenas
