Just tried it, one of the worst pay to win mmos I have ever seen, absolute shit.
You have to pay real money to CRAFT and REVIVE. thats PATHETIC.
Let alone playing the game youll go through a full bar of energy in about 30 minutes, thats a dollar per hour.
dont bother with this game, game play is fun, but you had best be bill gates if you expect to play more than an hour a day.
"Pay to Win MMO"? I haven't spent a dime on the game yet, nor have many of the top players as far as I know... I agree the game has its faults, but they are mostly in lack of content and lack of features (i.e. right now there's only two bosses which is inexcusable for a 2011 game, not to mention the lack of skills, only 25 enemies and most are recolors). Needing to pay is not one of those faults. Clearly this topic is not entirely in line with that fact, as I'm attempting to gain higher-quality items quickly, but that is only because I do not enjoy grinding Jelly King over and over every time I start up the game. I'd like to, you know, do something else, like try Tier-3 dungeons.
You only pay "real money" for one thing, and that's CE (Crystal Energy) which can also be bought with Crowns (ingame currency) which you will start at least breaking even on once you learn not to revive yourself (wasting Energy) and which Gates to pick. (Hint : Graveyards and Jelly King seem to be good choices.) You do have to use CE to Craft and Revive, but you will rarely Revive, and your Mist Energy (which regenerates back to 100 in 22 hours) will take out some of the cost of Crafting (as well as some cost of going through Elevators).
You do not go through "a full bar of energy in about 30 minutes". To use 70 Energy (starting from the first Subtown all the way down to Jelly King) takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, never less than 1:10, anyway. Your "full bar of energy" (that is, Mist Energy) is 100 Energy. There's no way you're using up 100 Energy in 30 minutes unless you decided it was time to Craft a bunch of things or that you thought it would be a good idea to revive (Hint : it's not, unless everyone else is dead).
The math of going through Jelly King runs actually works out so that you can, you know, do it again infinitely as long as you just keep buying CE with 5k Crowns. That may not be in Three Rings' (the developers) favor, as I'm sure they'd like more money (as evidenced by the recent increased cost of Crafting), but it's how it works. At least, until CE:Crowns ratio starts to be worse, like it was in the Beta days. But there's no evidence that will happen yet, as the highest it's gone recently was 5050, and it's sometimes down to 4800.
Now let's talk about paying real money for CE. That's a good idea sometimes, I guess, since the only way CE circulates through the ingame market is because someone bought it originally and wanted to get Crowns (or Items) out of it. But clearly you still don't know much about this, because at the lowest CE:USD ratio, you get 300 Energy per dollar (and pay 2.45$). If you seriously think that you can run through that much Energy, let alone the dollar's worth in that much Energy, in an hour, you're mistaken. (I mean, I certainly can't run Gates that fast. Can you?) Or do you mean that you Craft so much? Because that's really something you should elaborate on.
In any case, you're wrong, completely. Please leave the thread if you aren't going to help me acquire items/CE in Spiral Knights.
