Pick a hero you want to play and stick with him for a few games until you master it, Leoric is very good for starters. Or just tell people what you want to play and they'll give you a build.

Or do it right, and play every hero a good deal so u know what they can throw it you.

perserverence is one of my favorite starting items for nearly every hero/build. Regen is great for farming early game/harrassing and can be used to make better items.
