Bad ones tend to be the support/ward bitch type heroes from competitive play. This would be heroes like CM or Warlock. They aren't really dangerous early/mid game like your Zeus type heroes, and they become less and less powerful the longer the game drags on, which pubs tend to do.

Good ones are pretty much everyone else really. You get tons of people whose first item is a Ring of Health or other such garbage, so they have 800 HP by the 30 minute mark allowing nukers to remain rather dominant in the right hands. Carries are obviously strong, with games lasting over 60 minutes very often giving them time to farm up 4 T4 items.

i know bad ones and good ones, but surprisingly i never seem to go negative with the typical zeus heroes.
I've gone up to 10-3 with zeus and cm in pubs, which is honestly shocking to me.

woah what a score

heroes like naix, ursa, skeleton king, luna etc etc are non-failable in pubs, just go farm for 20-30 min and you have won

As long as you are superior in skill level and know what youre doing, you can make almost any hero work in a pub, you just have to adapt to the hero.

If you pick a carry / farmer hero, you have to farm a lot, use your superior map awareness to stay alive and get some lasthits on hero kills from time to time without risking your life. The time will come when youre farmed enough to take anyone in the opposing team and get away with it, which is when you start being more active. From that point on you pretty much rape through them untill your team can win the game.

With more gank and nuke focused heros (like named zeus), you can farm for as long and have to stay active. Try feeding upon weak enemies as much as you can to quickly rack up huge amounts of hero kill gold. Get superior mobility and disables to take advantage of their lack of map awareness and teamplay (daggers, boots of travel, guinsoo etc.). Heros like Zeus can permanently keep 1 to 2 opponents underleveled and underfarmed, while having a good income that way. This should give your team enough of an advantage to beat them 4v3 with the help of your now overfed semi-supporter.

Generally the hardest to play in publics are pure support heros. Those heros focus on enabling a carries farm in serious games and not getting farmed themselves, leaving both creep and hero kills to carries for the greater good. The problem with this kind of playstyle in pubs is that you cant really rely on the competence of your carry. Most of the times you wont even have proper babysit lanes and to expect a carry to be good at last hitting is unrealistic most of the times. This means you either try to make your hero into a decent teamfight supporter by farming more than you usually would (fast refresher warlock or guinsoo on dazzle or some shit like that). Some people just play a carry-supporter by getting DPS items on a hero totally not suited for DPS, but if you find really bad opponents it might work out.

PS: 10-3 in a public is not even close to a good score. However score doesnt really show how well youre actually playing, especially in pubs. Ive had 0-15 maidens in serious games that were a million times more helpfull than 10-0 rikimarus in pubs, just by supporting properly, warding, roaming, buying tp scrolls and healing items, disabling and preparing kills etc.

Score doesn't matter that much. Support heroes should generally let carries get the kills...
