I don't get why there are so many versions of dota...
Heroes of Neworth ( I think ) and League of Legends ( not sure if this is dota related )
What is the difference and which is better with more people playing it?

I've only played DotA and LoL, so I can only give educated guesses about HoN, but my main understanding is this:

HoN was created to replicate DotA, because WCIII has limitations to its maps.
LoL was created based on the image of DotA, but is attempting to break off from it and have its own gameplay, even if its core gameplay is that of DotA.

As for which is better, that's a matter of opinion. If you want a new and improved DotA, try HoN. If you like DotA, but want to try something a bit different, try LoL.
Both HoN and LoL still need improvements, as they're both new, so for the moment I still consider DotA the best option.

HoN is basically a replica of DotA. They take changes directly from IceFrog's patch notes, but pretty much anything that isn't a direct port of DotA needs to be balanced. As it is now, its never going to reach the balance level that would allow for satisfying competitive play.

LoL is like the WoW of DotA. Its very simplistic and fast paced, and very noob-friendly for people who aren't experienced with the DotA gameplay. It'll probably appeal to a wider audience with its easier-to-learn style, possibly becoming more popular, but never competitive.

I do not agree that it wont become competitive. Once balancing is worked out it will be good for competitive.
