You want to build him as a tank. How you tank is determined by the enemy team. Hood -> Pipe/Vanguard depending on the team, with maybe a few bracers thrown in if you took hood, and phase boots. He's one of the few heroes that can actually use vanguard. If you farm exceedingly well, you can rush heart/radiance. Your luxury items are heart/shiva/radiance, depending on circumstance. Magic stick/Ring of Basilius early on can help with his mana issues.

items to buy while in lane:
sobi mask
hood of defiance (this is priority)
ring of health (for vang)
boots

after "laning" phase:
finish ring of basil
finish vanguard
finish phase boots

start helping with team fights, pushes, etc

farm either a heart or radiance
if farming extremely well, go radiance, otherwise grab vitality, then finish heart.

if needed, you can turn your hood into a pipe
