They didn't "lose" the source code. 2.6 r3 was worked on by different people than the current development team, so you can't expect them to have the code from the previous version. You have to remember how long ago 2.6r3 was released.
On another note 2.7 will be released soon (I'm not part of the development team, I'm just a really old member and beta tester of the community and talk to them all regularly.) and Hdx's warden workaround has been released. Anything you need to know, or need can be found at:
http://python.bot.nu/warden/Hdx has actually had the workaround working since the day it went down, (I've been using it since then) but he has just now publicly released a much more stable version.
Edit: That page doesn't have the latest version (However the guide is still exactly what you need to do to get it running), the latest version just changed a few lines of code to make it work with other bots such as foolops. Enjoy.
