His ult downs his armor enough, the more it goes down, the less effective each negative armor point is.

This is true. While deso does give good damage, it's orb isn't that impressive with Slardars ulti, unless the enemy is stacking armor. Armlet provides everything he needs, and glitching armlet for more HPs is amazing on Slardar.

I just wanted to say that I think HoD is a much more team-friendly item then BkB.
If you manage to make slardar a big enough threat to get nuked by the opponents,
it's better to eat 'em and survive then having the other team nuking down your int/agi heroes.
