I would think that it is based solely on the icon you receive. If it looks nice, people will think you're good. That's all.

Paying large sums for xxx wins, seems ridicilous to me, the only thing you get is an icon, which you havnt even earned, you dont get any items/power ups or anything in the lines. You get a nice score and a nice icon, only problem it is not due to your skill.

Or is there some deeper logic i am unaware of?

I'm too fucking lazy to play that much to get new icons on my new accounts.
