Are you using the expansion also? For a fairly noob friendly fast (games will generally last 10 minutes) 1v1 guide:
http://www.wcreplays.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89885&highlight=gruntapultOld as heck, still works pretty well.
Amusingly i don't actually see guides for playing normally.
A really really basic guide: (presuming TFT)
At start 4 peons to gold mine, 5th to build altar. Build peon
First peon out makes burrow
Second peon out makes barracks.
third peon out to gold.
have 4-5 peons on wood.
Summon Blademaster after altar finishes.
Build another burrow
Build grunt after barracks finishes (i suggest you hotkey it to something like 5 or 9, so you can select it to build stuff when you're busy elsewhere)
build shop
Build another grunt after first grunt finishes. Go creep the nearest green camps, your hero should always be active or healing, or both (when creeping, make sure low hp units are being salve'd but not being hit).
After second grunt finishes, upgrade great hall.
Build 2-3 more grunts (to have a total of 4-5)
Tier 2 (great hall upgrade finishes)
Build bestiary and spirit lodge. Begin training shadow hunter
Learn ensnare and adept training and build raiders and spirit walkers.
Get blademaster to level 3 if not already (lvl 2 ww, lvl 1 crit).
Send blademaster to scout the opponents base and to scout where he is, creep with shadow hunter and all units to get level 2 heal wave and level 1 hex.
Because the opponent is going to be as good as you are (not very) see what he is building, learn which buildings make air units and see if he is. If he does begin making them, head to tier 3 asap.
Buy heal scroll from goblin shop and mana pot for SH from your shop (clarities to use to make sure he is full mana before fight, mana potion for extra heals during fight)
General ground versus ground fights:
Spirit link everything.
WW and attack something with blademaster
ensnare melee units with raiders to try and ensure they can't reach your units
If you have a kodo beast (recommended to add at some stage) devour a ensnared unit
SH to heal when required and to use heal scroll when needed and hex to help hero kills.
