I wouldn't recommend blademail. Berserker's call and blademail don't synergy well together, as all the damage you take will be severely reduced by your tremendous armor gain, and if you get Hood it will be reduced against everything. Vanguard is usually unnecessary, as well, unless it's a physical DPS brawl, even then you might consider hood over it, depending on heroes. Statistically, against most teams, it essentially offers the bonus HPs and very little EHP, which generally isn't worth the cost. An early vit booster never hurts though.

Just to make it clear, vanguard is in no way core on Axe. As on many heroes, it's situational at best.

Hood is pretty standard against most lineups. After that, a number of items could work, depending on the situation: Shiva/Heart/Pipe are pretty standard.

If you're pulling creepwaves or jungling double stouts are necessary.

Do you know what you're talking about? I fail to see how taking more damage is good in any way on axe, or even generally in the game. Vanguard is really only a viable choice on Axe, maybe Magina, but no other hero should get it, and I mean NO other hero. I also fail to see how double stouts are required if you're pulling considering how you'll barely be taking damage except for moving the creeps to pull your own.

I believe your second sentence is referring to my comment on blademail; please correct me if I'm wrong. Blademail takes the damage reduced by your defenses and then throws it back it them, applying it to theirs, so it gets reduced twice. Having Hood/+9001 armor makes it pretty useless, as the damage will be pathetically low. The static bonuses it gives don't warrant its use on Axe.

Vanguard is somewhat viable on a few other heroes, bristleback/viper, potentially several others considering the recent changes to bloodstone and heart; it's still a situational item on any hero that takes it. The viability of vanguard, as a general use item, is debatable. The biggest problem with vanguard is that pesky RoH. Most of the time you don't need the health regen, at all, but you have to pay for it. What it boils down to is a slot saver, which doesn't really matter for Axe. The fact that it the damage block isn't that effective to begin with doesn't help.

By pulling I meant diverting creepwaves.
