When I started to learn 1v1 I did it the hard way bk on Sc1.

Make friends, frequent the same channels or forums and play with the community you become a part of.

Once you have got that far the rest will fall in to place, you will be master then GM before you know it

Also try out some of the free to join tourneys that are regularly organised, its a good way of measuring your improvement and get you used to playing in a more pressured environment.
