You need WOL before HOTS since HOTS is the expansion. If you want to play WOL while on expansion do this: Menu -> Options -> Gameplay -> Expansion Level -> Pick Wings of Liberty.
If you want to go back do the same thing but change it to Heart of the Swarm.
If you buddy is on Wings and you are on Hots he will be "Spawned" up into Hots but currently only allowed to play as Terran until a later patch which will allow all 3 races to be chosen *Not to sure if this is already in effect. Seen them ramble about this at Blizzcon I believe*

You can spawn him up to HotS, which some people have talked about in this thread, or you can just log on WoL and play with him on WoL.
