Eye bleeding is usually caused by an injury to the eye. Other serious causes include cancer, malformations of blood vessels in the eye, and severe irritation and inflammation of the iris, which is the colored part of the eye. Small subconjunctival hemorrhages can result from pressure changes such as those experienced in sneezing or violent coughing. Hypertension (high blood pressure) and medications that interfere with blood clotting are other risk factors for subconjunctival hemorrhages.
Because any injury to the eye can jeopardize your vision, you should see a doctor immediately if you have bleeding inside the eye. In some cases, such as with a slight injury to the eye from trauma, the eye will heal on its own, and the blood will be absorbed. In other cases, such as with more severe trauma, emergency surgery is required to repair the injury and stop the bleeding.
