The original manual says, that the standard marine's rifle are Gauss rifles. Which is obviously not 100% true, because as far as I know, the Gauss rifle uses an electromagnetic field to accelerate the bullet, which would mean the lack of both bullet shells and muzzle fire. I guess it's a hybrid weapon of some sorts.
