So, this idea actually started off as a troll, but I'm curious about how it would actually pan out. Essentially, someone was saying Zerg should have scourge to deal with the current skytoss situation.

I suggested there being a hive level upgrade for banelings, allowing them to grow wings and turn into flying banelings. While I realize this sounds silly, and I'm sure many of you will feel this way as well. I am curious about how it would actually play out. I feel like the cost can be scaled accordingly, but it seems like this could help zergs issues. While storm would still be effective against these banelings, I think it would punish the 1-a nature of skytoss, forcing protoss players to split their units atleast, and if they don't, or are caught moving, the banelings would aoe them down. You could give the banelings bonus to flying or something. They would also function much like scourge vs medivacs/mutas in terms of helping you control the air play. I think with proper scaling this could be a neat idea.

Just curious as to what everyone elses thoughts on this are?

It does sound like an interesting idea at least, not sure how well it would work with the current meta / balance. Maybe no bonus at all just to aoe a-move clumped toss.

Why would it be ridiculous? Banelings do the exact same thing to ground armies. Why not have something similar to deal with air? They can tweak the costs/numbers so it's not out of hand. My only concern would be that it would "hard counter" air and since Zergs econ is usually ahead they would be able to do it. But, I think it's something they could explore.

Its such a cost inefficient way to deal with mass air, so they would have to destroy 80% of the toss air army at least for it to be considered as worth it, similar to the old mass bane vs thor helion builds.

It would also be awesome so perhaps see a mechanic implemented where if you kill the flying bane it does no damage, same as brood war infested terrans.

This would require some micro, which Zergs are not accustomed to.
So no, it wouldn't work.

The problem is that there is no counter to scourge in high numbers right now ... so aside from maybe putting up a storm wall and having them fly through it ... you'll land the scourge on the units every time



And if you turn down the damage and rely on the AOE damage to make them split, I think they'll be relatively useless. Also, it kindof goes against the idea of starcraft already to suicide units like scourge and banelings ... you shouldnt be able to pay to kill enemy units like that. Banelings are forgivable because they have big downsides



BUT MAYBE IF YOU FILL AN OVERLORD WITH 4 BANELINGS AND CRASH IT INTO A CARRIER IT'D BLOW UP :D
