He is not American, he does not get a G.I. Bill. Unless they do have that program in his country.
Also he could be in reserves, non-combat or be in the conscripted service. Which many countries still have, i.e South Korea, Israel, Germany, etc.
Edit: Basically no one is sensitive here, you are wrong, I just did a little research and I don't think you have to be in combat(could be wrong), your first comment was insensitive, stop talking out of your ass.
it doesnt

It's the smart thing to do. At least in America it is. Get paid while not paying taxes, room, food. Get a G.I. bill that pays for 100% of your college education. Make real friends, travel all over the place. Military benefits >>>>>>>>>>>>> non-military benefits.
Good luck to you. I have no clue where you are from but if you are a 'merican then what branch are you going into? Air Force? =))
uhm well, he isnt american.
but i can only speak from a german standpoint and doing military here isnt very promising.
they will pay for college, quarters etc. but in exchange u have to sign for a long time and the military jobs arent as promising as jobs in the free enterprise.
its more like an alternative for people without a very promising perspective.
