While watching IEM. Was it just me, or did it seem like there wasn't really that much variation in builds for a lot of those players?
I understand the whole point behind Metagame and all. But everytime I'd watch a Protoss player. It was the SAME build style over and over. Except now in HOTS, HT's are much more used than Collosi.
I'm not sure if it's because I look for these things now, but I also noticed both players rarely seem to be able to inflict any sort of real damage against defending players.
Everytime I saw a Protoss try to use an early blink + mothershipcore build to get into Terran's base? They got smashed.
It just seems that defending is much more rewarding than being offensive. And with things like the Mothership core & photo overcharge on Nexuses. Defending is even easier than before.
There were some buffs/nerfs that I saw as beneficial. Like in PvP, not needing an Observer in order to detect Dark Templar? You can use an Oracle instead. This way a protoss player going for Stargate play over Robo play isn't outright killed?
Bard, try to convert what I am saying into something that makes sense please

I used to really enjoy Huk's style of play in WOL. Where when he would play vs terran he would micro a lot with his blink stalkers in the bigger battles in order to pick off vikings and such in order to defend his Collosi.
It just seems like micro isn't rewarded in the same way. Back in the day of WOL when her0 would get a warp prism, warp prism speed + collosi and could harass the shit out of terran? That was cool to watch tbh. I dunno, what the equivalent in HOTS is.
I think you're echoing a lot of the same sentiments that many players are feeling. It's just so challenging to do anything other than a 200/200 clash because of how strong defense has become in HotS. Yes, there has always been a defender's advantage, and always should be, but Blizzard blew it out of proportion...mostly to counter the complaints of the community in regards to timing attacks and 1 base PvP play (Nexus cannon with regards to PvP, TvP 11 minute timing attack, fast roach maxes; widow mines with regards to PvT/TvT timings (not a lot of ZvT timmings in WoL, it was just turtle for broodlords); spores vs stargate openers ZvP). The medivac boost was one of only a few new harass options...the other was the oracle. And while these make it easier to get to your opponent's base (let's ignore 1 base proxy oracle play for now, shall we Nevada?) the new methods of defense make it harder to deal damage against a prepared opponent.
Also, as the game develops more, build orders become more concise. They leave fewer weaknesses for players to exploit with timing attacks or harass. And with so much support towards the defensive side of the game, harassing just hasn't been as effective lately.
