ya, but theres like 5 divisions in each league in league, like bronze 1-5 ( 5 being the lowest, 1 being the highest in bronze league ) , silver, gold, plat, diamond then challenger which is pretty much gm

LoL has a "grandmaster" league too except its called "challenger"

You get to play your placement matches once every season.
It's true that the mmr system is way better in sc2, but that is also because there are assumptions that make it possible to be so(the biggest one, the fact that you play 1vs1 which can't be ignored in my opinion).
Also leagues are way longer to climb as they are divided in five x 100 points+promotionmatches(which u need to win in order to actually promote to same league next division).

I find that sc2 is only really really fun when you can watch progress and become better and play competitively.
before laddering, I found that unranked / team games for fun just didn't hold the same enjoyment game after game like a good
competitive 1v1.

With league, I can play both casually with friends and competitive with friends, not to mention league can be run on a toaster
for free so almost everyone of my friends can start up. Most are not very up to spending $80 for starcraft just to see how bad they suck
and how much time it takes to actually improve.

Diamond is like GM in SC2. Plat in LoL sort of like masters, gold ~plat - diamond, silver ~silver - plat, bronze ~bronze - gold
Difficult to compare the lower tiers.
