Why'd you have to get out of Southern California, what didn't you like about it?

inb4 tl;dr, csb

i lived in socal my whole life, it gets boring unless you're into the whole socal brofest and like to go surfing and dirtbiking. there's no niche for the kind of shit that i'm into down there, and graphic design is taking a backseat in terms of my profession, so it seemed like a good time to move.

plus, the cost of living is so cheap compared to what it is back home, most places here in gresham are under 1200 a month for a 2/3 bedroom house with a yard, which is substantially less than the 2300 we paid in socal. plus i'm sick of the whole desert urbania that southern california is comprised of, it's nice to drive 30 minutes east and find myself in the bumfuck egyptian woods just outside of portland. also, it gets old trying to visit friends where i grew up, and a lot of the shit i loved in LA as a kid just isn't there anymore. consequently growing up in a ghetto is finally paying off, because the worst problem they've got up here is meth addicts, and the places deemed "unsavory" here are just crawling with smelly tweakers that will, at worst, try to break into my house, which isn't a big concern for two 20-somethings with california plates.

i guess in the end i'm just looking for simpler times, where i don't have to rake in six figures to have a lax seniority. here you can feel comfortable rolling up your sleeves without looking over your shoulder because your boss is eyeballing your tattoos, and to be quite honest, i've come to the realization that i'd be happier building bikes and barbering than i could ever be working a 9-5 in front of photoshop, stressing about deadlines and client satisfaction with a product he doesn't understand.

Ahh, thought about moving too, but it's hard to actually commit to it when most of your friends/family live in one place. Was it still a hard adjustment?

well we've been here just over a week, luckily i moved up here with my best friend, so that's made adjusting to the new environment a little bit easier than if either of us had moved alone.

plus we're both sort of active and outgoing types, so we've met a few decent human beings already in the short time we've been up here. basically, when we got up here we found a bar in town and they had some good local shit on tap, so we sat down at the bar and started networking with some locals to find our bearings and figure out what's good in town. it helped dealing with the cold for the first few nights, too. this morning we woke up and saw some daylight and found ourselves a little too warm for comfort in 50 degree weather, which isn't something i've ever done before.

if you're thinking about moving, i'd advocate getting it done while you're still young, that way if you decide you dislike it you don't have to stop your life and consider some heavy commitments before going either way. also, facebook means you're never really that far from your friends.
