You can't prepare for every shitty foreigner, but you can prepare for what you expect to meet in the finals.

The major difference is foreign events you have about 6-8 different opponents to face in one weekend while GSL you have one week to study one opponent
Even if you "study" stephano for a foreign event it'll have to be half-assedly diving time up to study other potential opponents.
If Stephano had the balls to show his face in GSL he'd get exposed

You prepare for stong player that have good chance you will face in ro 8 or so. If you are a good player, you will most likely not need to worry about other random players til the ones you will face higher up. Besides, most of those strong players play in gsl anyways, so it's not much waste of preparation.

Most of the koreans at MLG can only go to these events because they are no longer playing in GSL. whether being knocked out of code S, or at round 2 of Code A, they rather go to a foreigner tourny with less strong players to try to win some moolah.
