How I learned Zerg and Protoss was that I used cheese strategies a lot. They work for a reason, especially in lower leagues. Eventually, if you're thinking about why they worked as you play/win/lose, you start seeing where more developed strategies come from and begin to transition into them fairly well.
For example, the Terran 6-Rax rush; usually works because the other player does not scout in time before the pressure becomes too much to handle. Now let's say your opponents start beating your 6-Rax, it's time to change strategies. What if I skip 2 Rax and expand instead? Now you have 4-Rax, enough to apply some pressure here and there and to defend if necessary, and an expo on the way.
Of course, you might be fine just pulling some random build order and strategy off the web, but if you don't understand why it works, you'll have a harder time beating more experienced players, especially when you need to change some or all of your strategy on the fly as the game progresses.
This guy's right. It's not the only way to get good, but it is one way to get better. It's easier to get better at something if you understand why strategies work. It's easier to get even better than that when you apply those reasons into more developed strategies in mid/late game.
