why do u need the core? srs question

The core helps with a huge counter-attack or all in of the units they do make or have. By making these DT's at their base, if you lose them or don't add 3 gates, or get charge done in time, you're left fairly defenseless back home compared to his army.
The core also helps against reaper scouting and harass early on, since it pops out the same time as the stalker.
