You have your build which you want to master yes. But if the person builds a counter to your build, your build will NOT work, because.. he's countering it!
SC2 and pretty much every single RTS is all about countering the other person.
Imo part of mastering a build is mastering how to transition into a counter if it doesn't work.
"countering" in sc2 is more like getting a blind build order counter (like 10 pool vs 15 hatch, stargate vs robo, pool first against CC first on the low ground, stuff like this)
obviously you can "counter" mutas by building phoenixes or "counter" siege tanks by using vipers on them, but those are just things you have to know to do and to incorporate into your "build"
your "build" being a safe opener that can deal with anything with an emphasis on expanding so you can win by having more stuff
