Friend of mine is so terrible at the game he could lose to a monkey, but he queues ranked because there's no purpose of grinding unranked games.

Exactly, so why mess around with the trash in unranked?
It's filled with Nevadas and tryhards that can't handle a loss.

I've seen some good tryhards in unranked just thought this would be like league where when you're placed it's based largely on prelim matches where you go

It is, however sc2s MMR system is pretty good. If you're placed in the wrong league you will move into the correct one pretty fast.
