any kind of comparison = than
"this is greater than that" "i like this more than that"
story, action, occurrence, etc = then
"then he went to go do something" "i did this, then that"
so basically you can use 'then' all the time until you encounter some kind of comparison. that would be a 'soft rule' that i would follow if i were you
