Yeah that is the one thing I have to keep a check on. I try to play it safe with the build and transition to thors or drop starports sooner based on if I can find a spire with reaper but mostly it comes down to the timing of their 3rd. If they play a macro game and take a quick 3rd I'm almost always safe.
