If you're in bronze league the biggest thing you can do to improve your game is your macro. Go to teamliquid/youtube or something and watch a pro do a build order that inspires you and copy it. Practice it multiple times in custom games until you can do it perfectly. Then when you're confident execute that build in the ranked. It will be a lot scarier doing it online but if you did the build perfectly in practice it should be sub par against a real person.

If you're scared and always feel that an attack is coming just put a couple of zerglings out in front of his base. Then you know he can't really attack you. Biggest thing to improve your game is your Macro and you can improve it all the way until Masters. After that i think having map control would be the next biggest thing that will prevent you losing, because if you see his army and you have nothing, then you know to make a shit load of units.

I would advise you to start watching some of Day[9]'s videos on youtube. Just search day9 and it'll come up. Start pretty much anywhere with pretty much any of them.
Beyond that, google for some common Zerg build orders. For now, learn 1 build order for ZvP, one for ZvT, and one for ZvZ. Practice those and you'll get a lot better, rather than trying to freestyle it.
