Only your match making value/rating counts, promotions come and go based on that, points are jus to show you your current standing in your division. Mmr is a hidden rating, wich you earn if you win a game, and lose some if you lose one.
For example; if you are diamond, and constantly beating masters leauge players with a 50+% wlr you will surely get promoted. But just play the game, don't give a fuck about leauges.

It is not necessary.
