What I don't get is why are we trying to compare sc2 to league of legends??? Sure, they made their company solely by making skins and new champions every 3 fucking days. Cool. Good for them. What I want to look at, is how did wc3 or broodwar become so popular? Custom games and battle.net!! Okay - wc3 was a fantastic game (melee wise, ladder wise). But I could only play 2 or 3 games because it was so slow. I had to soak up the rest of my time with custom games. Wc3 without custom games is what sc2 is going to turn in to. I feel like that is one main solution to make the STARCRAFT 2 EXPERIENCE better. Not skins. What sc2 player wants their marines to look like Mario and Luigi? That would be retarded. Custom games.

and for the record, I thought all of this was retarded to begin with. the fact that some people believe a game as incredible as this could go anywhere is ridiculous.

Jesus Christ you people are the very embodiment of chicken little with an extra large side of ignorance.

Not really, you're kind of an idiot.

It's quite obvious that if WoL stayed for another 2 years like it is it would be a dead game, you say 'omg the skies aren't falling!" well, they are for WoL/SC2. If nothing changed, the game would not succeed; that's what people are saying and it's the truth. Easy solution is make sc2 fun to play, meaning let there be stuff to earn for playing unranked games. Every game or win should get you something so you feel some sort of accomplishment from winning. That's why people play LoL, it's fun and you get their currency points for winning.

The UMS comparison to BW is a little off because someone who plays Starjewelled all day isn't going to contribute to the 'esports scene' of SC2. We need to make playing games of melee SC2 fun and worthwhile. It's not a coincidence that both DotA 2 and LoL have this, SC2 doesn't and that's the reason for people not watching tournaments.

For the argument that they were talking about on ITG, Wheat tried to compare it to like LoL=American Idol and Breaking Bad = SC2 where no one is saying 'how can we make Breaking Bad more like American Idol to get more views'. It's an awful analogy, Breaking Bad isn't going to take the American Idol viewers, they're completely different shows with completely different target audiences. LoL/DotA2/SC2 all have the same consumers, hell I bet the majority of players who play one have played/thought of playing/have watched SC2. So saying 'what can we do to be more like LoL' is perfectly valid and should be encouraged.

WC3 wasn't a big game, the esports scene was even smaller than BW. Getting people to get on SC2 and play custom games isn't going to help anyone, we need them to be playing melee. LoL players don't get on and play games other than LoL, they play the same game they are watching the pros play. They get on and play 5v5 LoL, they watch 5v5 LoL. We need to make playing 1;1 SC2 fun and worthwhile.

Sc2 is too hard to get into and too competetive for the casual gamer to enjoy, sc2 is never gunna compete with the playerbase of LoL without turning the game to complete shit.

If they want people to play melee, they need to get rid of the stupid ladder system they have.

I agree with this part. WoL is on a decline for sure. I do agree with Idra/incontrol that it probably is due to all the games out there. Think about all the games that came out lately, D3, GW2, LoL, Dota2, CS:GO, etc. Having more casuals will not effect the tournaments or sponsorships. They will add nothing but numbers/number of copies sold. Casual means you just play a little bit, don't add to community/forums and probably watched 1-10 pro games. Adding more players will not do anything.

But, a lot of people bought SC 2 because of BW. SC 2 lacks a lot of what the SC community wanted. There is a map making community within SC, UMS community, Fastest community and Clans etc. SC 2 lacks all of that. The only thing we have is ladder, which is way better than BW had. (Played BW for like 8+ years)

What needs to be done is to keep/bring back existing players. I am sure a lot of SC players from BW have left. As mentioned above, no UMS, Chat, Clans, Fastest map, Zero Clutter, BGH, etc.

I disagree with your last statement though. We can not be like LoL. The skill cap is too high compared to LoL at the lower levels. This deters people, also LoL is really meant to be a team game. While SC is really a 1vs1 game. People have ladder anxiety on SC.

This is actually incorrect. WC3 was big in Korea/China. Not as much as in the US that BW was.

Another reason people forget. BW you could play on almost any PC/internet connection. Also as Incontrol said, BW was pirated a lot. Every free to play model game I know can be played on almost any PC, maybe not internet connection. While SC you need a decent computer to play it on normal settings.

Edit: Also accounts, in BW you could make infinite accounts even with the same e-mail. So if you went to a pc cafe you could just log in. While in the new B.net 2.0 you have to use your one account which is linked to all your Blizzard games.

Which brings a point, that smurfing was fun/done by anyone who played BW. People could make a new account and smurf to practice/train which brought some of the ladder anxiety down.

It wasn't 'big'. It wasn't bigger than games now and it wasn't bigger than BW in Korea, in China it was but mainly because of DotA. The US scene for both WC3 and BW was incredibly small and overall as a spectator esport they were not 'big' like games are today.
