Both games are good. The story is more interesting in SC 1 and SC 1: Brood War just because of how they tell the stories but SC2 isn't all that bad if you overlook the cliches. Where SC1's story is very methodical and detailed, SC2's story is very generalized with broad strokes kind of decisions happening. However, although the storytelling definitely drops off in SC2, the gameplay itself is much better. But you need to play it all if you want the full story.
As for multiplayer, as a beginner you'd get the most out of playing SC2. Way more active, looks better, supported on modern operating systems, etc. The multiplayer gameplay itself is actually very good, despite Blizzard's decline in storytelling. The gameplay itself is very fun and challenging and makes winning a serious chore sometimes. Makes winning that much more satisfying. It's also the hardest esports game to play competitively but the matchmaking system makes your progression very layed out and predictable. I had the most fun playing this game when I was working my way up the ladder and watching myself improve. Don't even try to play SC: BW competitively, you'll have to jump through several loops just to get it to run on your computer then you'll just be turned off by the insanely needy interface.
There's also the arcade in SC2 which consists of user made maps that are mostly casual game modes like tower defense games, tug of war type games, etc. You can actually access the arcade for free.
All in all, I would say that as a Blizzard fan, you should definitely own SC1, SC: BW, and all the SC2 expansions.
Really well explained and nothing much more to add. If you enjoyed a lot from what you said D1/D2/W2 you shouldn't have problem dealing with the old 2D views for playing the firsts opus of StarCraft. Other then that. Imo, i suggest starting out with the SC1 and BW, because you will feel (hope so) the nostalgia of old characters around SC2 later, and making more easier to instinctively start out after, with the mechanics and interface of SC2, which only been with the time more detailed and easier to play with for the players.
But, it's also not necessary to start out with the first serie, if it's not making you a big problem to skip some history of the game.
About SC2, it's less trouble to try run it too, nowadays on PC, the game is a good successor to StarCraft outside you'll have to buy DLCs.
