I just started playing and game gave me 10 gold keys, friend however got none while was in the same game.

How do you get golden keys?

Register an account on the Shift website. Then, at the main screen of the game before playing, go to Extras, then Shift Code.

Enter all the codes for your system once: http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Golden_Key

Game makers occasionally give out new codes, so keep your eyes open.

so how did I randomly get 10 free keys?
only played for 2 hours and did nothing special/

no, bought it on boxing day (dec 26) and didn't have any codes to redeem

Supposedly there was a glitch in the game that did something to some players, and when they fixed it they gave keys to players who experienced problems. I heard (on a forum), that some people who weren't actually affected got keys as well. This is what I'm guessing happened here.
