Most people use it to store weapons, trade and or give weapons to others without losing the original.
It's also a great help for finding item abnormalities when making custom items for fun, such as the shield Omega Rose in Borderlands one

This is just to point out the fact that wasting FG on Borderlands items is pointless when you just as easily trade the raw item data on other sites for free or other items by the request of others.
