There are 5 gun boxes in new haven, i got 2 legendary and 2 alien in 4 tries. If interested ill tell you where all 5 are.

they aren't hard to find lol...and i usually get nothing from them lol..i get better items in vendors than chests

ehh.. not rly.. but dropped items are the best.
5 chests are easy to find in new haven.. but at level 50 they are only like 42-46.. I have my own spot for 48-50 items and it's just as fast, if not faster, than new haven.
