There are similarities. The game play, not really like D2 since it's First person shooter ofc. But there are 4 character classes, 3 skill trees etc, so the character development and dungeon crawling/treasure chest hunting is very similar. A large list of quests for each region of the game etc, all similar, but not identical. Major difference skill-wise would be they are all passive except your first "primary" skill which is active and can be cast every 30 seconds or so, due to the power of it.

Depends really. It's already become one of my favorite games, and probably my favorite for the 360, as I didn't really have a favorite title before. It's the most fun I've had since Final Fantasy X. Final Fantasy X was the most fun I've had since D2 1.09. So, imo, it's right up there. I don't think it will have 10 years staying power like D2, but I do believe people will play it consistantly until a sequel. It has that much replay value, I can already tell. So many quests, challenges, can be replayed a second time with the same character with harder enemies. There is PvP arena, which I haven't tried personally, but apparantly is slightly lacking. Biggest flaws imo, are no trading, and sometimes when you pick up a gun, it will automatically equip that one and put your currently equipped gg gun into your inventory in which case you need to pause and change, which is tedious online since you can't actually pause.

Trading can be done, no problem, there is just no "safety." It's easy enough to toss a gun or w/e and whomever else to grab it. There is no way to trade money or ammo in-game though. Money is a pretty big component in the game. I can almost guarantee it will be patched since it seems to be everyone's chief complaint. The new DLC looks good too. Look at Ewok's bolded official borderlands thread for additional info.
