I have both dragon's age and Fallout 3. While Fallout 3 is a fantastic game that can scare the shit out of you (turn the volume up!), it never really got me hooked. I'm pretty far in it, but don't feel the urge to complete it.
Dragon age on the other hand is the technically inferior game, but it's just a lot more fun. I've been playing it for weeks now and I will go for the immediate second play through when I've finished this one.
Guess it boils down to whether you like swords or guns, third person or first person, dragons or mutated monsters , party based game or a solo RPG, the middle ages or a post-apocalytic world.
Dragon's Age does like/feel an awful lot like a LOTR variation. A good thing, if you ask me, but still... Some parts are just shameless copies.
It's more like KOTOR than Lord of the faggotry rings, the only way you are comparing it to LOTR is because it has all the mythical beings that almost every Fantasy Middle ages game has (Elves, Dwarves, Werewolfs, Giant Trees, ogres, goblins (who are darkspawn)) Also, thought I'd let you know if you get scared at Fallout 3 you're a pussy ^_^.
Anyway, I'd suggest getting Dragon Age.
