I'm new to wow but want to use fg to purchase a token to sub to play classic.

1. Do I need to be subbed to receive a token
2. Will the token bought on modern, be able to be redeemed for a wow sub that will work on classic

you need to subbed yes, but if you go to blizz live chat you can ask for a day to try it out properly before you purchase game time and they will normally give you the day

1. yes and no, you can ask support for 1 day free premium to use the token. You can also store tokens or gold on level 1 character and use it to get sub even if you are on free account. Remember that nonsubb cannot trade with other players.
2. tokens are redemmed on your bnet account. one token = 1 month on both classic and latest patch

nope, as gifted game time takes place outside of the actual game
