I've been a long time player and lately had the most fun playing classic WoW, but got bored once I hit 70 in TBC. I quit during august. Before that I hit endgame in Shadowlands which was actually pretty interesting.

If I came back now, which would be the better option? I'm trying to see which has more of a playerbase. TBC endgame just felt like a huge grind tbh

retail will always(hopefully) have the bigger player base. There is a 4-5 month downtime until next tier probably so you have plenty of time to level/gear and clear the current content. my 2c

Player count will usually be down during content droughts, assuming that's the case for retail currently. I haven't played since the beginning of the year, so can't say for certain.

Okay, ill be a little more specific

Im rank 1 in pvp/have killed mythic sylvanas already

PvP: the ladder at the top end is dead, literally 0 qs past 2900-3k mmr some days and even on days where teams Q up its only the same 2-3 teams and the comp diversity is terrible (only jungle, ret/war, rnp, and wws who randomly 1 shot you) the game will be insanely dead in this area/bracket until the 2 week notice which wont happen until hear about 9.2 (lol....)

In PvE, the amount of time youd spend grinding for shards/korthia/torghast is literally > time in tbc

Why tbc? Because its something new, so many teams actually q arena and they actually q to have fun compared to retails "only q if you know something u can beat is playing"

Pve aspect of tbc probably not as fun (most of these fights are insanely simple and just go off of your tanks being bad or not + rng[vashj])

But if you dont like tbc prob just play d2r/warzone/league of legends/poe etc etc

Classic releases are like fotm rpgs, they bring in 1-2 m players for like a month. End of the day its literally the same game at different states, its comes down to your opinion. I get bored of the classics because the nostalgia is there but farming things ive farmed for years already I can't do again.

If you only pve in either game eventually you will get to a point where you will only raid log even if you are casual (there really isnt that much content out there lol in either game)

Tbc pvp is a terrible version of wow (imo) but literally 100x more fun when compared to retail/shadowlands in general

I still do arena on retail; but since queues are dead i havent really been bothered lately

Meanwhile tbc qs are always poppin

I only do boosts on retail lately, but last time I watched a stream it was a saturday night and only 1 2900+ team was qing(rmp) and they kept on getting a 2700 ret/warrior
