Well I ended up making a mage on classic, have not played since wotlk update & feel a bit lost on what to do besides questing. Is there a way to figure out what skills I should buy from the mage vendor?

Plan on questing / aoe grinding along the journey

Edit: also what profession would you guys reccomend?

Plenty of guides online..but mostly dmg spells u can skip things like remove curse/dampen magix/fire spells if ur frost or frost if ur fire vice versa. Dont skip the instants like fireblast/coc/arc exp tho...fireball/pyroblast skip that

Good profs 4 starter are herb+mining

Tailoring is ok u get good crafted robes...and with bc netherweave nets=must 4 pvp

Engi is op with all those retarded stun grenades which u can throw inbetween ur casts for burst dmg..
Bs has a antifear trinket

Enchanting..well u can charge ppl fees and make oils but tbh id skip that

Ended up getting 15 gold from someone at the start, have been just learning all the skills since they are so cheap atm. Going to just focus on cold skills now though!

Ended up going with herbalism and alchemy since I heard herbalism makes a ton of money, is it worth keeping alchemy or picking up engineering?

Pretty much level up core damage spells, and conjure foods/mana. Frost Nova you can leave lvl one literally forever; adds minimal damage for the cost of mana.

If you're gonna do any type of AoEing, go frost. Can cheese with 3/3 imp blizz or you can shatter combo them. Otherwise doesn't really matter Fire vs Frost (Fire might be bit quicker, but frost will help you survive especially on PvP server).

If you're gonna level the old fashion way with quests, stack spirit (of the Owl items) for sure. Otherwise go for 'of the Eagle' items for stam/int for AoE.

Profession wise, if this is your first character on the classic servers, i'd go Herb+Mining to get some initial gold to buy BoE items. At that point you can buy enough items to do solo/boosting farms. Example on my server is SM cath/arm runs. 8g per circuit, and can do 5 per 40-55min which will be (8g*4 players)(5)=160g/hour not including loot and then at that point you can just drop mining/herb and take/buy whatever professions you want. Engineering is must for PvP. You picked a good class to farm gold my friend, we mages can do everything well (PvM, Farming, PvP). (ZG boosting can rake in like 200g+/hour too)

Also, if this is your first character and you are low on gold, Id advise against buying all the skills. It will just tank your gold when you dont use most of the skills for farming. Just figure out what you want to be doing and level up the main skills.
