the expansions function as a SORT OF reset. All the shit people spent the last 2 years doing becomes pseudo-worthless once the new content opens up. There are still some gear/goods that are useful at the new increased level cap, but in general it's a complete reorganization of the economy.

That being said, Blizzard hasn't announced how they will handle the future of the classic realms. It's still purely speculative, whether they will progress to the expansions, make brand new content or just periodically release fresh realms to that people can start over every so often.
