Shadow competes with hunter as being the #1 best in 1v1 PvP, but there is less room for shadow in premade WSG/AB. If any at all. Depends on how serious the premade and their goal is!
As a discipline priest, you're always wanted and needed in premade WSG/AB. Cannot fail there.
As a holy priest, you're always wanted in every piece of PvE content there is. Both 5-man and raids. You don't have to spec into deep holy until C'thun, btw. Can heal in shadow spec up until then. If your guild lets you do that, however, is an enitirely different matter. :P
Priests in vanilla, no matter disc, holy or shadow, is incredible. Both to play and be in classic WoW. You cannot go wrong, no matter what you do. It's my choice as well.
As already mentioned, best races are dwarf for both PvE & PvP and undead PvP, troll PvE. The only one that really really matters is playing dwarf for Fear Ward. On the horde side, it doesn't matter just as much.
Thanks for your answer guys

I'll go for shadow until 60 ans then check what I'll do. Sad thing that disci is only useful for BGs, I really love that spec
