thinking of starting up again. is dk still one of the best characters for soloing current and old content?
don't want anything super complex or anything just want an easy character to play that can solo the content. I don't need to kill things faster I just want to be able to stay alive and kill everything (just assume I will have very bad gear) so something probably not super gear dependent either.

Blood DK is superior in terms of self sustain I believe, and also dishes out a decent amount of damage. The only drag is they don't have much mobility.

sounds good thanks! is icy-veins good? I used them in the past then heard most of their guides were old and not very good. I suppose some of them still might be good though.

Ya, they're great. Just look out for when the guide was made, usually they list what patch version the guide was written under and the date it was added or updated.
This one is for patch version: 7.3.2 (current live patch) and was updated Oct 15, 2017 so you should be good.

I just read a bit about the levels scaling throughout the zones.. didn't catch if that is for every area in the game or only new zones, but will that make a difference? If it is all zones I would assume many raids won't be possible pretty much regardless of your class/spec, unless maybe you have the highest end raiding gear which I will not.
how are the dk dps specs if I would need to switch to one for some reason (assuming low areas don't scale for example and I just need quick clears)

I believe Unholy is considered one of the best DPS specs currently for PVE. The level scaling is only for the Legion zones. If you want the leveling to go a little faster, you might want to consider upgrading your heirlooms, which can now go to 110.
You will be locked out of LFR until you reach a certain item level, yes. And usually other players will also demand a certain item level of you, if you want to be invited for a higher tier raid difficulty.

Affliction warlock has great healing through damage and +50% movement speed(at the cost of life). Combine that with the artifact weapon that causes a small explosion everytime you kill something and you can clear old content really fast. The explosions cascade and you can basically wipe out a room with 50+ mobs just from one tick of an instant cast dot killing the first mob. Get engineering for the loot a rang item plus enchanting to DE everything for higher gold gains and it's easy farming.

With the new legion every class is simple cookie cutter my grandma could plug and play
