What if WoW had this concept of "seasons" where as at the end of each season, everything is reset.

WoW could have rewards/ranking based on the best ranking guilds for each season (you could even have different categories such as: fastest clear time, most clears, bonus points for first/second clear, etc)
Based on your guild's rank, your guild gains something.
One could be territory. High ranking guilds get to make reasonable decisions about specific territory on that server, such as PvP statuses, world boss spawns, event triggers, anything else you can think of
Could have achievable titles, gear skins and mounts (later purchasable after the season or expansion for casuals)

Players do raids to get better gear (to keep the concept of progression), but at the end of the season, everyone's gear is reset to a max level raid introduction baseline.
Talent trees and abilities are changed (not necessarily in a large scale), and it all starts over! They get to experience progression again but with new talents and abilities (So they aren't just trying to get the same gear for the same build again)!
This keeps the game fresh and feeling new even without new expansions.

Expansions give players new gear, new raids, new dungeons, and rankings to fight over while keeping the same system that favors progression and new builds/strategies but also keeps competitiveness for those that want it.
It also introduces new territory (where naturally the newer content will have more desirable territories than old content) and other bonuses to claim.

It also stops the endless stream of power creep!

As far as PvP, you could keep talents/abilities all the same or you could change them as well to keep it innovative and interesting!

Most/ some of this already happens when a new patch(with new raid/dungeons etc) goes live

"but at the end of the season, everyone's gear is reset to a max level raid introduction baseline."

I dont like that part, like someone who has like 30+ days played, and some scrub who got like 5 days played, gets the same ilvl?
That doesnt seem fair, and pretty much removes a lot of motivation to play wow

"High ranking guilds get to make reasonable decisions about specific territory on that server, such as PvP statuses, world boss spawns, event triggers"
Imo blizzard is the only ones that should have that kind of influence on the game. Otherwise it will be abused (somehow)

You say it's not fair but tons of games use the concept of seasons... The only time you become equal again is the start of the season...

Progression is probably the top reason that most people play MMOs. Having a continuous stream of progression by resetting and changing the circumstances keeps people enjoying the game rather than just grinding it.

Turns the game into a competition rather than farming useless items.

WoW is a game you need to grind in to be good at.
There is no time for "seasons" other than PvP.

The season is the current content.
If you want to be good, clear it on Mythic.
If you want to be mediocre, clear it on Heroic.
If you want to be casual, clear it on Normal.
If you suck at life, clear it on Raid Finder.

Game is already a competition

You just lose if you don't stay dedicated for the long run.
