I just started playing again after 10 years.
Got myself a 61 Orc hunter on the Stormreaver server. Make sure you pick a nice server because i went with my friends and its a dead ass pvp server. My queue times for bg's are horrible, about 45-1 hour and dungeons are 15-30 min waits... i heard Alliance is less of a wait, tanks and healers are basically instant que.
Game now seems more of a dungeon/raiding now more then walking around exploring doing actual quests.
The mods are called Addons and you can download the program called Curse to download any addons for most pc games. I personally only use recount(dps displayer for the group) and ElvUI(a changeable interface that has 100's of options to personalize how you like
guess I haven't been around since the start, but hasn't it always been about end game raiding and pvp? also they added world quests and there are a lot of different ones so there is still plenty of questing to do
basically everyone rolls dps of course there are long wait times

any basic advice on server choice? playing on us
any pros and cons to alliance or horde, same with race choice.
if wow can hold my interest i intend on investing lots of time in it. if not i'll probably play for a month.
any other basics you think i should know about?
edit: are there any mods i should use? i think theyre called mods. anyway yea as u might be bale to tell im completely new to wow and i want to find out what other players thinkbefore i start doing more in depth research.
if you know anyone that plays just pick the same faction. otherwise it doesn't really matter unless you plan to do end game progression raiding.
read about the classes and play what you think sounds fun. if you don't have fun try another class. nothing worse than investing a bunch of time only to hate the class and level something else
addons like deadly boss mods are nice for encounters, but not really relevant until closer to end game
