I'm curious how safe it is to trade fg vs gold? How likely is it that WoW will find out and your account banned? Trading huge sums of gold for fg seems risky to me as won't the account be flagged down?

Any preventative measures?

I've done it many times throughout playing this game, I've also bought gold from random websites. Been playing this game for like 10 years too. I've never done crazy amounts though, I imagine if you buy 1mil gold it could maybe be suspicious but even then probably not. You're just a drop in the bucket they wont notice or care.

I make a rule to never buy more than 100K at a pop.

A record of what? You transferring gold from Alliance to Horde?
Pretty sure this is the intended purpose of the neutral AH and also why the hefty fee is there.

EDIT - Also I was sure all the Auction Houses merged both factions... thought I read it in a patch note.

Yes, in 6.0 auction houses are unified between factions on a given server. The benefit you cite is a major reason behind the change.
